You don’t need to be a professional to write good copy. It’s not uncommon for people to think a professional copywriter will be able to write a magic headline or email, as if it’s some dark art that only those who have been trained in it are able to do. Amy Harrison, copywriter, consultant, and speaker at Write With Influence, and Joshua Tijerina, CEO at Longbeard, sat down at our annual NIO Summit to tell us otherwise.
Amy told us that actually, the marketers and sales reps in your organization who are having direct conversations with people are well equipped for the task. Those casual, face-to-face conversations are where you get tons of information to be able to write good copy.
The majority of copywriting is research. It’s not fancy techniques or clever wordplay. As a copywriting consultant, she approaches sales reps and asks what kinds of conversations they’re having. What are the sticking points people have, and what gets people to light up and “get it” with your organization? Amy will take those answers and put them into words.
The more research you do, the less fancy magic you need.
