I’m sharing a few thoughts on unrestricted funding and capacity-building funding for nonprofits. While grants tend to be very restrictive, it is possible to find grant funding programs that will help with costs related to the core operations of a charity. For small nonprofits that want to move away from grants as their primary source of funding, my suggestion is to make building fundraising capacity a priority, which will enable your team to build a pool of committed and engaged individual donors (increasing the amount of unrestricted revenue coming into your organization).
