All too often, when we talk about nonprofit sustainability, we focus on fundraising and revenue generation, and pay little attention to leadership succession planning. And, in many instances, when we do talk about succession planning, the conversation is held in a separate silo from the financial and fundraising discussions. Indeed, only 27 percent of nonprofits participating in a recent BoardSource survey indicated having a written succession plan in place.
This discussion will focus on ways nonprofits can prepare for leadership transition resulting from the unexpected departure of a board chairperson or executive director; as well as the anticipated transition of tenured leaders. We will talk about the challenges, as well as strategies to ensure as seamless transitions as possible
