Just like with donors, it’s more cost-effective to keep the ones you have, but that doesn’t mean you stop acquiring new ones. You need new subscribers to grow your cause and to replace subscribers who fall off your list, either because they unsubscribe or just stop opening your communications.

There are many ways to gather new subscribers, but unfortunately, some are not open to you right now, such as signups at events. Asking for an email address when someone visits your website is an excellent plan, but kind of passive.
