Nonprofit grant writing uses various writing styles. Different sections of the grant proposal, letter of inquiry (LOI) and foundation applications require different writing styles. Mandy and Marie talk about their own, different, writing styles and how grant writers can submit the most quality grant proposals.

Foundations and Organizations that read grant proposals and applications want to see both facts and data as well as the “heart” or “story” behind the nonprofit requesting funds. Program and Project design elements of a grant proposal involve more descriptive, narrative writing. You are often describing the community affected, target population, outcomes, and funding area. Writing that “story” is what can win the hearts and minds of the potential funder reviewing a grant proposal.

A needs assessment involves making a point, something done better with fewer words: 50 kids will benefit from this project. However, when you write for the program design, you need to explain HOW those kids will benefit and provide detail and more information in that narrative to tell the story, paint the vision and use more words with a different writing style.
